Ryan Reynolds, Rob McElhenney buy pro soccer team in new FX docuseries ‘Welcome to Wrexham’!

Ryan Reynolds and good friend Rob McElhenney, of “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” fame, are two of the biggest names in the entertainment world.

But in the new FX series Welcome to Wrexham, we see the two stars like never before – as owners of a professional football team.

“It’s exhilaration and, oddly enough, I feel a sore growing,” Reynolds said.

The duo teamed up to buy Wrexham AFC, a fifth-tier football team in the National League, the lowest level of professional football in England.

“It’s really about the community and the people who love their club,” McElhenney said.

While they are front and center throughout, the heart of their documentaries focuses on the small Welsh village that has passionately followed its team since its founding in 1864.

“Our bid is as focused on the club’s fans as it is on our experience trying or trying to run this club that has no prior experience,” Reynolds said.

And not only did they have no experience before getting into business together and buying the club, but they haven’t been friends yet.

“Ryan and I have never met,” McElhenney said. “We got to know each other through social media. He slipped into my DMs on Instagram, and we’ve been friends ever since.”

The rest is history, and now the two hope to make history.

McElhenney says his dream is for Wrexham AFC to climb the ladder and one day win the Premier League championship. Until then, watching the drama of the football season unfold in a town where life revolves around the team is as good as the thrill of victory.

“We set out to do a show that was about football but really not about sports,” McElhenney said. “These are the people you really support, and you fall in love with the club because you fall in love with the city.”

And if they start to win, the city will never be the same.
